ASD Closure
Catheter closure of a suitable atrial septal defect using a dedicated occluder device.

Overview
An atrial septal defect is an opening between the upper heart chambers. When it causes a significant shunt or right-heart enlargement, closure may protect the heart and circulation.
Who may be considered?
Device closure is considered when the defect has suitable rims and causes clinically important blood flow. Very large or anatomically unsuitable defects may require surgery.
How is the procedure performed?
A catheter is advanced through a femoral vein and the closure device is positioned across the defect under echocardiographic and X-ray guidance.
Recovery and follow-up
Most patients mobilise quickly and leave hospital after short observation. Antiplatelet therapy and follow-up echocardiography are commonly recommended.
Risks and safety
Bleeding, rhythm disturbance, device displacement, residual shunt, clot formation and injury to nearby structures are uncommon but recognised risks.
